Typhoon

Joseph Conrad · 1902 CE · Novel · English · Modernist

Captain MacWhirr of the Nan-Shan watches the barometer fall, consults a book on storm strategy, and works out that going round the weather would waste coal, so he holds his course into a typhoon in the China Sea. Below deck two hundred Chinese labourers are shipping home with seven years of wages in camphor-wood chests that the rolling breaks open, scattering the coins among them. Conrad built the book on a master too literal-minded to imagine danger, and a mate who can imagine nothing else.
