Victory
Axel Heyst, a Swede who has made a principle of attaching himself to nothing, is left living alone on a played-out coaling island in the Malay archipelago. On the mainland he takes a girl out of a travelling ladies' orchestra and brings her back with him, and the hotel-keeper he has slighted revenges himself by telling three drifters there is money hidden out there. Conrad's last widely read novel, and his most direct test of detachment as a way of living.
