A Hero of Our Time
Five episodes out of the life of Pechorin, an army officer posted to the Caucasus, reach the reader out of order and through three sets of hands: a travelling narrator, an old staff captain who was fond of him, and finally Pechorin's own journal. He carries off a chieftain's daughter, ruins a princess to make a point to a man he intends to shoot, and analyses his own coldness with more precision than anyone else could manage. The preface warns that the portrait is of a generation and not of its author.
