The Interrogation
J. M. G. Le Clézio · 1963 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary
Adam Pollo has installed himself in an empty villa above a Mediterranean beach and cannot say whether he walked out of the army or out of an asylum; he writes long unsent letters to a girl called Michèle, follows a dog through a whole day, hunts a rat with a length of iron. The book itself comes apart into notebooks, newspaper cuttings and gaps, declining to settle the questions that officials will eventually put to him. Le Clézio wrote it at twenty-three and won the Renaudot with it, at the height of the nouveau roman and half in argument with it.
