Wandering Star

J. M. G. Le Clézio · 1992 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary

Esther is thirteen in a village above Nice in 1943, where Jewish families live out a summer's grace under Italian occupation until the Germans arrive and the escape routes run up into the mountains. After the war she sails for the new state of Israel, and on a road beside a camp she passes a Palestinian girl walking the other way; they write their names in each other's notebook and exchange nothing else. Le Clézio set the two displacements against one another without letting them meet again, a design the book has been argued over ever since.
