Manas

Kyrgyz oral epic · c. 1500 CE · Poem · Turkic · Renaissance

A chief's son born in exile on the Altai grows up to pull forty scattered tribes back into one people and lead them east through the passes toward the Tian Shan, against Kalmyk and Chinese armies and against his own kinsmen. The telling runs on past him into his son Semetey and his grandson Seytek, so that a single man's war becomes a people's argument for a place to live. Manaschi chant it from memory without instruments, in a rush that can go on for days, and the fullest recorded versions run past half a million lines.
