The Book of Dede Korkut

Anonymous · c. 1400 CE · Poem · Turkic · Medieval

Twelve stories of the Oghuz on their summer pastures, each closed by a white-bearded bard who counts up what happened, blesses the household and warns how little of it will last. A childless couple's son brings down a bull and is named for it; a one-eyed giant born of a shepherd's assault on a fairy takes two boys a day in tribute; a khan's son lies sixteen years in a Christian fortress while a rival courts the girl he was promised. A pagan heroic world with Islam laid lightly over the top, and the text that Turkish, Azerbaijani and Turkmen literature all claim as their starting point.
