The Secret History of the Mongols
A boy born clutching a clot of blood grows up fatherless on the steppe, is put in a wooden collar by his own kin, and hunts down the raiders who carried off his wife before he begins taking the tribes one at a time. The chronicle keeps the small ugly things — a half-brother killed over a fish, a sworn brother who breaks the oath, a mother's rebuke that lands harder than any defeat — right beside the campaign lists and the decrees. Written for the Mongol royal house within a generation of Chinggis Khan's death, it is the only account the Mongols left of themselves in their own language.
