Taras Bulba
An old Zaporozhian colonel greets his two sons home from the seminary at Kiev with a fistfight and takes them straight to the Sich, where he talks the camp into a war so that they can be blooded. The younger has already seen a Polish governor's daughter through a window in Kiev, and the siege of Dubno puts her on the other side of the wall. A Cossack romance quite unlike the Petersburg tales, and Gogol's expanded 1842 revision pushed its Zaporozhians a long way toward Russian Orthodox nationalism.
