Waverley

Walter Scott · 1814 CE · Novel · English · Romantic

Edward Waverley, an English officer raised on his uncle's library of romances, takes leave from his regiment in 1745 and rides north into a Scotland his reading has not prepared him for. The Baron of Bradwardine's household, the chieftain Fergus Mac-Ivor and Fergus's sister Flora pull him steadily toward the Jacobite side. The book that invented the historical novel, and named the twenty-six that followed it.
