An Edinburgh mob storms the Tolbooth in 1736 to hang the captain of the city guard, and in the same prison Effie Deans lies condemned under a statute that presumes a concealed birth is a murder. One sentence of perjury from her sister Jeanie would free her, and Jeanie will not say it. She sets out on foot for London to ask the queen for the pardon instead.
