Michael Kohlhaas
A Brandenburg horse dealer is stopped at a Saxon tollgate for a permit that does not exist, leaves two black horses as security, and gets them back worked to skin and bone. Every petition is smothered by the junker's relatives at court, so he sells the farm, arms his grooms and issues decrees of his own. Kleist built it out of the sixteenth-century record of Hans Kohlhase, opening on one of the most upright and most terrible men of his day.
