The Marquise of O
A widow of unimpeachable reputation, living in her father's citadel when Russian troops storm it, places a notice in the newspapers announcing that she finds herself with child, does not know how, and asks the father to present himself. Her family turns her out of the house while she waits for an answer. Kleist took the situation from an anecdote in Montaigne and put the assault behind a single dash the next forty pages decline to open.
