Penthesilea
Outside Troy the queen of the Amazons abandons her nation's quarrel with both armies to hunt one Greek, because the law of her people is that a woman takes her husband by capture on the field and may not choose him. Achilles, once he understands what she wants, offers to be beaten and does not make the arrangement plain enough. Twenty-four unbroken scenes drawn from the post-Homeric Amazon material; no theatre would stage it in Kleist's lifetime.
