The Broken Jug
The village judge of a Dutch hamlet wakes with a battered head, no wig and injuries he cannot account for, and must hear that morning a complaint about a jug smashed in a girl's bedroom overnight, with a district inspector sitting at his elbow. Everything happens in one room, by testimony, in blank verse, as the court works backwards towards a night the judge would rather leave alone. Kleist said the idea began as a wager over a copper engraving.
