An Ideal Husband

Oscar Wilde · 1895 CE · Play · English · Victorian

Sir Robert Chiltern, an Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs whose career and whose marriage both rest on a reputation for probity, is approached at his own reception by Mrs Cheveley, who knows exactly how the fortune underwriting that career was made and wants a speech in support of an Argentine canal scheme. Lord Goring, an idle bachelor and the one person present with nothing to lose, is asked to sort it out. It was running in the West End alongside The Importance of Being Earnest when Wilde brought the libel action that closed both.
