A Woman of No Importance

Oscar Wilde · 1893 CE · Play · English · Victorian

At a country house party Lord Illingworth offers a secretaryship to a personable young man with no fortune, whose mother has raised him alone and has never named his father. The post is the sort of chance the boy's American sweetheart distrusts and his mother refuses to discuss, while the assembled guests conduct three acts of conversation about English men, English women and what either is permitted. The talk is better than the plot, which Wilde knew, and he handed almost the whole second act over to it.
