The Prince of Homburg
Sleepwalking in a Brandenburg garden on the eve of battle, a cavalry general half hears his orders, dreaming of a laurel wreath and a girl's glove, then charges before the signal next day and wins. The Elector has him court-martialled for it, and the prince, who assumed the victory would answer for him, is walked past his own open grave. Kleist's last play, written in 1811, kept off the Prussian stage for decades as an affront to the army.
