The Earthquake in Chile

Heinrich von Kleist · 1807 CE · Short Story · German · Romantic

A young tutor waits in a Santiago prison for the bell that will announce the execution of the convent girl he loves, and at that moment the city comes down. Survivors camp in a valley outside the walls where rank and reproach seem shaken loose with the masonry, until a service of thanksgiving is called in the one church left standing. Kleist set it at the earthquake of 1647 and published it while the Lisbon argument over providence still ran.
