Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc
A childhood companion, writing as an old man, recounts the farm girl he grew up beside, her voices, and her progress from a village to the head of an army and then to an ecclesiastical court that records every word against her. The narrator's devotion never wavers and the trial transcript does the rest. Its author worked on it for twelve years, published it anonymously, and considered it the best thing he wrote.
