The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County

Mark Twain · 1865 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Victorian

Sent to a played-out California mining camp to ask after a man named Leonidas Smiley, an eastern visitor is cornered by old Simon Wheeler, who begins on a different Smiley altogether. That Jim Smiley would bet on anything - a horse race, a dog fight, the parson's wife's recovery - and trained a frog named Dan'l Webster to out-jump any frog in the county. The sketch that carried Western newspaper humour east and made Twain's name overnight.
