The Prince and the Pauper
In the same London hour of 1537 a pauper is born in Offal Court and a prince in the palace, and years later the beggar boy is staring through the gates when young Edward has him brought inside. They try on each other's clothes, notice the resemblance, and a guard throws the wrong boy into the street. Twain's first historical novel uses the swap to walk a future king through the working of his own criminal law.
