Ruy Blas

Victor Hugo · 1838 CE · Play · French · Romantic

Don Salluste, disgraced and ordered from the Spanish court, dresses his footman in a dead cousin's name and pushes him into the queen's presence knowing the man already worships her from a distance. Under the borrowed title the lackey rises to first minister and turns on the grandees looting the kingdom in the most quoted speech Hugo wrote for the stage. Written to open the new Théâtre de la Renaissance, it is the last of his verse dramas to have kept a place in the repertory.
