Hernani
Three men want Doña Sol: the old duke who is her guardian and means to marry her himself, the king of Spain climbing to her window at night, and the bandit chief in the mountains who is a dispossessed nobleman with a blood claim against the crown. To buy an hour's shelter the bandit hands the duke his hunting horn and his word that he will die whenever it is sounded. The opening night in February 1830 turned into a running battle in the Comédie-Française between Hugo's young partisans and the classicists, and is taken as the night French Romanticism took the stage.
