Le Cid

Pierre Corneille · 1637 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

Rodrigue and Chimène are promised to each other on the morning her father strikes his, an old man too spent to answer for himself. He kills the count in the courtyard within hours, which leaves her demanding his head from the king in the same voice she used to accept him, and the Moors land below Seville that night. Corneille worked from Guillén de Castro's Las mocedades del Cid; the Académie française condemned the result, and the quarrel that followed set the rules French tragedy obeyed for the next century.
