Cinna

Pierre Corneille · 1641 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

Émilie was raised in the household of the man who proscribed her father, and has made her love conditional on his assassination, so the conspiracy is already sworn when Augustus calls in the two men leading it to ask whether he should lay down the empire. They argue it opposite ways in front of him, and one of them goes on to sell the plot. Corneille read the emperor's clemency out of Seneca and Montaigne and made it the hardest political act a ruler performs in French tragedy.
