Tales of Samurai Honor
Twenty-six cases in which a warrior's obligation — to a lord, a brother, an adopted son, a man met once on a road — is called in and paid at a price wildly out of proportion to what set it running: a bequeathed whistling arrow, an insult over a board game, a debt discharged decades late. Saikaku, a townsman writing about the class above his own, keeps the accounting flat and lets the cost speak for itself. Published the same year as his merchant book and usually read against it, since obligation governs both ledgers.
