Fostbraedra Saga
Two boys in the Westfjords swear brotherhood on the terms that whichever outlives the other will avenge him, and one of them grows into a man who kills strangers for practice: a shepherd on a hillside asks what he has done, and is told nothing at all, but that he was standing conveniently. The other is a poet, clumsy with women and slower to reach for an axe, and the oath takes him to Greenland and then into the household of King Olaf of Norway. Among the earliest of the family sagas and the flattest in its telling, with the killings entered as levelly as the weather.
