Egil's Saga
A Norwegian family falls out with the king unifying the country and takes ship for the new settlement in Iceland, where a grandson is born ugly, violent and, from the age of three, a poet. He kills his first man as a boy, raids in the Baltic, fights for an English king, and once buys his own head back from an enemy with a night's composition. Attributed since the nineteenth century to Snorri Sturluson, though no manuscript names an author.
