The Moor's Last Sigh

Salman Rushdie · 1995 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

Moraes Zogoiby, born into a Cochin spice dynasty and ageing at twice the ordinary rate, sets down four generations of his family while confined in a Spanish hill town. At the centre stands his mother Aurora, Bombay's great painter, whose canvases invent a Moorish never-land and whose quarrel with her son runs through the Emergency and into the city's communal burning. Rushdie's Bombay elegy, named for the spot where Boabdil is said to have wept over the Granada he had surrendered.
