The Ground Beneath Her Feet

Salman Rushdie · 1999 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

Vina Apsara, the half-Indian singer of the biggest band on earth, is swallowed by an earthquake in Mexico in 1989, and the photographer who loved her alongside her partner Ormus Cama tells the story of all three. Ormus hears songs years before anyone writes them and sees, through a tear in the air, a world running slightly differently from this one. The Orpheus myth restaged in the recording industry, where the lost singer is pursued through fame rather than the underworld.
