Doctor Zhivago

Boris Pasternak · 1957 CE · Novel · Russian · Modernist

A Moscow physician who writes poetry is carried through the 1905 unrest, the front, the revolution and the civil war, losing his practice, his household and his footing in a country being rebuilt around him. In a Urals town he meets again a nurse he had twice crossed by accident, while his wife and children wait elsewhere. Refused publication at home and smuggled to a Milan press, it won Pasternak a Nobel the state forced him to decline.
