The Passion

Jeanette Winterson · 1987 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

Henri, a French village boy who enlists to be near Bonaparte and ends up wringing the necks of his chickens, tells half of it; Villanelle, a Venetian boatman's daughter born with webbed feet who deals cards in the casino and loses her heart, literally, to a married woman, tells the other. The retreat from Moscow throws the two narrators together and sends them back towards a city whose canals will not stay where they were. Winterson's second book took the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and fixed the pattern of her historical fabulism.
