Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
Jeanette is adopted into a Lancashire Pentecostal household by a mother who sorts the world into friends and enemies and has raised her for the mission field, and by sixteen she preaches well enough to be trusted with a congregation. Then she falls in love with a girl from the market stall, and the church decides what is to be done about it. Chapters named for the first eight books of the Old Testament carry the story, with fairy tales and Arthurian fragments breaking in wherever the argument gets hard.
