Anne of Green Gables
L. M. Montgomery · 1908 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist
An ageing brother and sister farming on Prince Edward Island send to the orphanage for a boy to help with the chores and are met at the station by a talkative red-haired girl instead. She renames every pond and lane she passes, breaks a slate over a classmate's head, and works her way from charity case to the head of the school. Montgomery's Avonlea became the most translated Canadian book and the founding text of the orphan-heroine story.
