Sanshirō
Natsume Sōseki · 1908 CE · Novel · Japanese · Modernist
A twenty-three-year-old from rural Kyushu rides the train up to the Imperial University and finds a Tokyo of streetcars, lecture halls and a young woman named Mineko who lends him money and will not say what she means by it. A stranger on the train tells him Japan is going to perish. The first panel of Sōseki's loose trilogy on what the new education does to a provincial boy.
