The Three-Cornered World

Natsume Sōseki · 1906 CE · Novel · Japanese · Modernist

A painter walks out of Tokyo into the mountains looking for a place where he can feel nothing, and puts up at a nearly empty hot-spring inn kept by a divorced woman the village calls mad. He wants to compose her face into a picture and cannot decide what expression it lacks, while the war with Russia draws men out of the valley. Sōseki called it a haiku novel, and it argues that art begins where feeling is put down.
