Sitting Alone on Jingting Mountain

Li Bai · c. 753 CE · Poem · Chinese · Medieval

The flocks have flown high and out of sight, a last solitary cloud drifts off at its leisure, and what remains in the frame is one man and one mountain regarding each other. Four lines, no incident, and nothing a summary could call an event. Standard in Chinese criticism as the clearest case of emptying the visible world to leave a single relation standing, and dated to the wandering years after the court dismissed its author.
