Quiet Night Thought

Li Bai · c. 727 CE · Poem · Chinese · Medieval

Moonlight lying across the floor beside the bed looks for a moment like frost on the ground, and the traveller who mistook it raises his head toward the moon and then lowers it again. Twenty characters, four lines, no allusion and not one word a child could not read. Learned by heart across East Asia before formal schooling begins, and the most quoted thing its author wrote.
