Climbing the Heights

Du Fu · c. 767 CE · Poem · Chinese · Medieval

Wind keen, sky high, gibbons crying grief; a white sandbar and clear water with the birds wheeling back over it. Boundless, the falling leaves come down shower upon shower, and inexhaustible, the long river rolls on; ten thousand li of autumn hold one perpetual traveller, and a hundred years of sickness bring him up onto the terrace alone. Written at Kuizhou on the Double Ninth, and generally treated in Chinese criticism as the finest single example of regulated verse in the language.
