The Violent Season
Octavio Paz · 1958 CE · Poem · Latin American · Contemporary
Nine long poems written between 1948 and 1957 across Paris, Delhi, Tokyo and Geneva, opening on a hymn spoken among ruins where Naples and Mexico are laid over one another. The season of the title is history itself, and the war years and the exhaustion after them are treated as weather a man has to live in. Paz chose to close the gathering with the longest poem he ever wrote.
