City Without a Name

Czesław Miłosz · 1969 CE · Poem · Polish · Contemporary

The title sequence is spoken from the salt and heat of Death Valley, where the landscape gives out and the Wilno of the poet's youth comes up in short numbered bursts instead, with its lamplighters, its river and its dead. Around it the book takes on Berkeley in the late sixties, a counterculture the poet finds politically innocent, and the oddity of writing Polish verse on the Pacific. Gathered from work of the years 1961 to 1969 and printed by the Instytut Literacki in Paris, which published him through the decades when Poland would not.
