The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis

José Saramago · 1984 CE · Novel · Portuguese · Contemporary

A physician back from sixteen years in Brazil takes a room in a wet Lisbon in the winter of 1935 and is visited, across the nine months the dead are allowed to wander, by the poet who invented him. He reads the newspapers as Spain slides toward war and the Portuguese state hardens around him, and courts two women who want different things. The book is an extended argument with Fernando Pessoa, whose heteronym Ricardo Reis is.
