Blindness

José Saramago · 1995 CE · Novel · Portuguese · Contemporary

A man stopped at a traffic light loses his sight to a whiteness rather than a darkness, and within days the eye doctor who examined him has it too, and then the city. The first of the afflicted are interned in a disused asylum guarded by soldiers with orders to shoot, and one woman who can still see conceals it in order to stay with her husband. It is the book that carried Saramago's name out of Portugal in the years before the 1998 Nobel.
