Waiting for the Barbarians

J. M. Coetzee · 1980 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary

A magistrate administering a quiet frontier town for an unnamed empire has his routine broken by a colonel from the capital, who arrives to interrogate captured nomads. He takes in a native girl left crippled by the questioning, and his care for her becomes indistinguishable, to the empire, from treason. Torture's grammar exposed, and complicity examined from the inside.
