Foe

J. M. Coetzee · 1986 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary

Susan Barton is put over the side of a ship and washes up on an island already occupied by a morose castaway who builds stone terraces he has no seed to sow, and by a servant whose tongue has been cut out. Back in England she pursues the writer Foe from lodging to lodging with her letters, wanting the island set down, while he wants cannibals and pirates and keeps asking about the daughter she went looking for. Defoe's castaway rewritten from outside, around the one witness who cannot testify.
