Slow Man
J. M. Coetzee · 2005 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary
Paul Rayment, a retired photographer in Adelaide, loses a leg when a car hits his bicycle and refuses a prosthesis. He falls for his Croatian nurse, Marijana, and for the idea of her family, until the novelist Elizabeth Costello arrives uninvited and begins to direct his life. Coetzee's late Australian fiction turns the question of who is writing whom into a comedy of obligation.
