The Boy in the Earth

Fuminori Nakamura · 2005 CE · Short Story · Japanese · Contemporary

A young taxi driver in Tokyo, abandoned as a child and passed through foster families and orphanages where he was beaten, finds the past pressing in when his estranged father tries to reach him. The short novel keeps close to his perception, his blackouts and the violence he cannot stop remembering. It won the Akutagawa Prize and established Nakamura's reputation for dark, interior fiction.
