Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

Haruki Murakami · 1985 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

Two narratives alternate by chapter. In a near-future Tokyo a licensed data-launderer encrypts numbers inside his own unconscious for the System and takes a job from an old scientist working under the city, where sightless things wait in the sewers; in a walled Town where the clocks have no hands, a newcomer has his shadow cut off him and is set to read old dreams out of the skulls of unicorns. Murakami wrote the two strands to withhold from each other exactly what the reader needs.
