Norwegian Wood
A man of thirty-seven hears an orchestral cover of a Beatles song as his plane lands at Hamburg and is dropped back into 1969, when he was a Tokyo student holding a grief in common with Naoko, the girlfriend of the school friend who had killed himself at seventeen. She withdraws to a sanatorium in the hills outside Kyoto while a classmate named Midori pulls the other way. Murakami's one straight realist work and by a distance his biggest seller in Japan, it takes its title from that song.
